Like many people, you might already be planning your September holiday stay on the Gold Coast. So if you are looking for something a little different to do, why not spend a day out at the 7th annual Festival of Speed on Tweed, located in the beautiful river town of Murwillumbah.
Beginning on the 19th and finishing on the 21st September 2008, Speed on Tweed has become the most prestigious event on the Australia for historic car racing calendar.
Drivers and racing enthusiasts numbering over 20,000 converged on Murwillumbah in 2007 in mid-September for the annual historic speed trials. 200 cars challenged each other with speed and skill over the 1.4 km street circuit.

The Festival brings famous cars and famous people to town and you are likely to see some of the biggest names in motorsport having a quiet coffee at a local café or wandering through the Pits at the Showground. Drivers like John Goss, Kevin Bartlett, Jim Richards, John Bowe, Bob Holden and Denis Geary , just some of the people who played a great role in Australia’s motoring history, are now regular guests of Speed on Tweed.
And it’s not only drivers who take centre stage. Such famous race cars as Jim Richards’ 1982 Bathurst winning Godzilla, a 1985 Ferrari 156 once owned by Michele Alboreto and a Maybach once driven by Stan Jones, father of famous F1 driver, Alan, have all visited Murwillumbah.
But this event is certainly not just for rev heads. The local town of Murwillumbah offers visitors beautiful scenery, relaxed eating, a famous local pub and a sense of Australian history. And it’s only a 30min drive south of the Gold Coast via the major highway.
